The Hobbit

I was curious to discover whether some of my ideas for telling fictional stories with data visualisation could work on in adaptation - to take someone else's work and try and do ficitonal visualisations and, at the same tie, we were looking, at work for slightly more light-hearted projects to try out in social media, so I thought I'd give the Hobbit a go, as its short, well known and being adapted elsewhere, as you might have noticed.

Cartomancy

So the second genre that seemed a natural for the data fictionalisation treatment was swords & sorcery fantasy epics. After all every single one of them has to start with a map, and so many of them are so in thrall to the Joseph Campbell school of mythography, both of which lend themselves to forms of cartography - one across landscape, one across the pattern of story.

Death by Design

So one of my first realisations about telling stories with data vis was that a traditional murder mystery was the perfect kind of story for this narrative mechanism. After all, they rely entirely on the analysis of data - the three key ingredients of motive, opportunity and means are treated as puzzle parts and so lend themselves perfectly to be visualised.
