Idea for a short story
In a city state under the iron grip of an absolutist Grand Duke, a young, idealistic baker realises that the one thing the Duke would never suppress is bread. The Duke believes that as long as he can provide bread and circuses, then the people will not revolt. The baker believes he is wrong and starts distributing revolutionary messages with his bread, at first baking slogans into the crust and when that is too obvious, hiding pamphlets written on rice paper inside the loaves. Finally the bakers of the town develop a code, so that a single delivery of buns, pastries and bread can keep the recipient up to date with the plans of the rebels. Finally the day comes when everyone gets their delivery of a baguette with a banner hidden inside and a loaf concealing a weapon, and the people finally rise in revolt.
